Brook Food Sponsors Baker of the Year at the 2024 Baking Industry Awards
2024 marks our 11th year sponsoring and judging the prestigious Baker of the Year award at the Baking Industry Awards. And while it may sound like a cliché, the competition truly grows fiercer with each passing year. This category is dedicated to uncovering the nation’s top baker, focusing on the individual and the significant impact they have within their business or organisation.
For us, sponsoring an award that celebrates the skills, passion, and influence of a baker—rather than a business concept—highlights the very essence of our industry: the people. Without the drive, expertise, and dedication that individual bakers bring to the table, we wouldn't have the remarkable businesses and products that define our sector.
This year, we shortlisted ten exceptional candidates and our judges travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, visiting bakers in their environments, tasting samples, and learning about their journeys. As we say, the standard was exceptionally high this year. We even had two previous winners in the mix, adding another layer of competition. These returning champions had to demonstrate that their achievements over the past 12 months met our rigorous criteria and merited the scrutiny of our judges.
Our judges seek a baker who is practical and hands-on—someone who literally has their hands in the dough. They must possess skills that showcase growth and technical finesse. Passion and dedication are non-negotiable, whether expressed through product development, teaching, or another avenue. Most importantly, they must wow the judges. We are looking to be impressed, whether it’s through flavour innovation, overall excellence, or a unique initiative that stands out from the rest.
After countless hours of tasting and deliberation, we have selected four finalists who will join us at the Awards night. These bakers represent decades of collective experience; they truly are the cream of the crop and have risen to the top in this year’s contest. The baking industry is lucky to have such talented individuals, and through judging, we've seen bakers who are stepping up, taking responsibility within their bakeries, expanding their roles through product and business development, producing outstanding goods, exuding passion, and leading their teams toward collaborative success and growth. It has been a privilege to judge this year's finalists, and we are eagerly anticipating the crowning of the winner at the awards ceremony in October.
Ann, Brook Food's Director, shares her thoughts on this year’s finalist:
Aidan, Lovingly Artisan
This finalist has shown remarkable progress since his previous win in this category. He takes responsibility for every aspect of the process, every day. From planting his own wheat to overseeing growing, milling, and baking, Aidan is involved from start to finish. The bakery has expanded into pastry production, and with plans for a new bakery, the retail side is growing as well. The products, as always, are exceptional, and his overall output is outstanding.
Sandor, Stir Bakery
A great finalist who has demonstrated expansion and further innovation in specialty ranges since last being a finalist in this category. The quality of his work is exceptional, and the judges were particularly impressed by the sprouted grain sourdough.
Tomas, 4 Eyes Bakery
This finalist was truly outstanding. His presentation to the judges was impeccable, and he exudes passion for his craft. Tomas has a deep understanding of his subject, showing meticulous attention to detail in all areas. His end products are excellent, and his commitment to development is evident.
Gary, Seven Seeded
A hands-on finalist who not only bakes but also develops and manages his team. Gary’s products, though offered in a small range, are executed exceptionally well. His impact on improving products and expanding the customer base is highly commendable.
